What is Hypnosis?
Hypnos is ancient greek for sleep.
Have you ever had vivid imaginations? Have you ever been fully awake dreaming? Have you ever had an inner dialogue? How about inner storytelling?
The above were just rhetorical questions as everyone in the world has those experiences. The real question was:
Are you aware that you have these kind of experiences? Are you aware of the differences between those experiences?
All of the experiences in the image above have in common focused attention or absorption at different degrees. Hypnosis needs focused attention also but it is also about being guided, accepting willingly suggestion from outside to guide you in the experience. Hypnosis can range from mere vivid imaginations to fully awake dreaming, fully absorbed as if sleeping. The difference from dreams and awake dreaming you have on your own is that hypnosis is guided from the outside. Same as story listening/reading or movie watching, you are guided from outside into an imagination.
